Sammanfattning
In our modern society, mouth rinses have become commonplace pharmaceuticals to the general
public. The manufacturers of such chemicals promise, often through cunning and aggressive PR
campaigns, that mouth rinses will provide a bright smile and help against all sorts of oral diseases.
Consumers react to the «documentation» with trust and a desire to become healthy, prevent bad
breath and oral infections by purchasing the products. Yesterday’s mouth rinses normally contained
single ingredients like fluorides or chlorhexidine, which had been substantially tested before efficacy
was claimed. Today’s mouth rinses are mostly composed of a combination of ingredients against a
host of conditions with added compounds to enhance taste, flavor and color. The possibility that the
combination of several ingredients in a single mouth rinse may reduce or eliminate the activity of
«active» components is imminent, and since most of these mouth rinses have been released to the
market without proper scientific testing, other than for security reasons, a number of over-the-counter
mouth rinses may merely be for cosmetic use. This article describes and discusses a host of
different classes of mouth rinses available over-the-counter, and offers advice on how to select
mouth rinses that actually have the promised effect.
