Sammanfattning
Scandinavia, along with the rest of Europe, has an aging population.
The prevalence of diseases increases by age. Due to an increased
life expectancy a majority of the population experiences several
diseases in their life span. In old age a combined process of normal
aging and age-associated diseases occur in human beings. Our
dental patients are often affected by polypharmacy, resulting from
multi-morbidity. Age-related biological changes and the impact of
multiple diseases may result in altered effects of medications in
the elderly, when compared to younger people. Accordingly, the
frequency of adverse drug reactions, including oral reactions, is
often higher in elderly people. It is crucial to take into account the
general health of elderly patients and to underline the importance
of an updated medication list.
