Sammanfattning
One of the most important risk factors in the development of aggressive forms of periodontal
disease is an impaired immune system. Chronic diseases and disabilities that have a major impact
on the immune system are often associated with the aggressive form of periodontal disease among
children and adults. The immune system and particularly neutrophils play an important role in
controlling the bacterial attack in the periodontal tissue. The severity of the periodontal disease
depends on the immune response to the bacterial attack. Aggressive form of periodontal disease in
children and adolescents resulting in premature tooth loss is uncommon. It could, however, have a
considerable impact on the quality of life for those who are affected. Under the current classification
of the American Academy of Periodontology, severe forms of periodontal diseases as a result of an
illness or disability, are named «periodontitis as a manifestation of systemic disease».
The treatment of periodontal disease in patients with these diseases is a challenge. It is important
that the correct diagnosis is made for the appropriate treatment to be given. A thorough medical and
dental history should be done and consultation with a physician is often necessary.
This chapter will provide an overview of diseases and disabilities that are associated with a severe
form of periodontal disease among children and adults
