Sammanfattning
Nursing for couples receiving fertility treatment is significant not only for the treatment
completion rate, but also for the couple’s ability to cope with life generally during the process.
In Denmark, fertility treatment is available free of charge from the national health service for couples
who are involuntarily childless or for single or lesbian women requiring donor insemination in order
to conceive.
For patients and their partners, fertility treatment is commonly associated with feelings of hope, grief
and fear. At fertility clinics, nursing is practised in a biomedical and technology-intensive domain in
which the success criteria are positive pregnancy tests and clinical pregnancies. In this setting, the
nurse must also, in many brief interactions over what is often a prolonged course of treatment,
maintain focus on the nurse-patient relationship and supportive care for individuals undergoing the
treatment.
