Sammanfattning
In 1994 it appeared in the Norwegian press numerous patient complaints against a dentist in
Haugesund. The complaints mainly referred to the dentist performing the treatment with dental
implants. A number of patients went through their lawyers to sue the dentist and his insurers. After
two trials were passed in patients` favor, the State and insurance companies in 2001 agreed on a
joint compensation system. On the basis of 204 specialist declarations it was found substitute basis
in 141 patients. Replacement therapy should wherever possible be decentralized by specialist in
oral surgery and prosthetics. The compensation for the insurance companies and the State was
finally about 14 million NOK. Counsel fees are not included.
The compensation case against a single dentist is special and very comprehensive in terms of both
the number of patients and the compensation amount. The article describes the background to the
case, what happened and how the case was resolved for the patients.
