Purpose: This article provides an overview of treatments for edema caused by bradykinin with a
special focus on the disease hereditary angioedema. At the same time the purpose is to focus
attention on other new medicines that can cause such edema.
Background: Several alternative drugs that can be used to treat and prevent edema caused by
bradykinin are now available. The introduction of other new drugs in the treatment of diabetes and
heart failure, inhibit the metabolism of peptides and may lead to such edema.
Conclusion: Angioedema caused by ACE inhibitors is a well-known side effect and it is possible that
other new drugs also will lead to such bradykinin-triggered edema. The attention of pharmacists to
this problem can contribute to effective treatment that is now available.
