When other treatments fail, penile implants represent the last treatment option in erectile dysfunction. The most commonly used implant is the inflatable three-
piece device, which allows the penis to be rigid for sexual intercourse and flaccid during the remaining time. Earlier penile implants were associated with high rates of
infection and mechanical malfunction. However, technical improvements have greatly reduced these problems. This has resulted in a patient satisfaction rate of 80-
90% in most studies. Thus, penile implants are a valid option in motivated patients with erectile dysfunction.
