Considerable progress has been made in the field of family violence in detecting, treating and
preventing different types of abuse. The author found however that one type of abuse largely has
remained undetected and unrecognized. This is the physical, emotional, and sexual abuse of one
sibling by another. The fact that sibling abuse has largely remained in the shadow has serious
consequences. Its symptoms go unrecognized and its devastating effects on the victim continue to
be ignored. To prevent such negative results, sibling abuse needs to be brought out of the shadow
and into the open. In this article the author contributes to greater openness by presenting clinical
examples, results from research on sibling abuse and finally, some methods for assessing sibling
abuse.
