Sammanfattning
The study describes what people who had been involuntarily admitted to acute mental health
wards thought what had made them threatening and aggressive, and how physical restraint could
have been prevented. Five persons formerly involuntarily admitted in Norway were interviewed. The
findings are: (a) Some of the rules were regarded as unnecessary and could result in
threatening/aggressive behavior; (b) actions intended to help the patient, such as seclusion,
compulsory medication or restraint, were described as provocative and could result in verbal threats
or acting out; (c) all the respondents missed interpersonal contact in the form of care and
conversations, which was suggested as an alternative to physical restraint.
