Sammanfattning
The aim of the present study was to explore to what extent dental phobic patients manage to
have dental treatment from an ordinary dentist after treatment at a specialized dental fear clinic. The
subjects were 16 patients who started treatment at the dental fear clinic in Bergen, Norway during
2013. We also examined the patients` experience of the treatment and the transfer to ordinary dental
care.
Only one of the interviewed patients had not visited an ordinary dentist. Five patients had started
treatment, but then discontinued due to fear of losing control and poor communication with the
dentist.
Fifteen of the patients evaluated the treatment at the dental fear clinic as excellent; one patient
evaluated the treatment as good. We asked the patients to reflect on what they believed was the
most helpful ingredients in the treatment. Eleven patients suggested that the dentist, and the trusting
relationship, was most helpful. They had met a professional who was an active listener and showed
respect. Five patients suggested that aspects of the treatment procedures were most important.
The study emphasizes the dentist's responsibility for the treatment alliance and for establishing
mutual trust. Further, the study underscores the need for strengthening patients' sense of agency in
the clinical setting.
