Sammanfattning
Background: The aim of this study was to investigate how patients suffering from chronic
illnesses experienced the use of a smartphone application as a support tool for medication
management.
Material and methods: We performed 9 semi-structured individual in-depth interviews with patients
who had used a smartphone application for a time period of minimum 2 weeks. The interviews were
tape recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using systematic text condensation.
Results: Patients experienced that the smartphone application was a good support tool to remember
to take medications and to get an overview of their own medication use. The patients that benefitted
the most of using the application were patients who were required to take medications at specific
times and patients who had not yet established routines for their medication management. We
identified usability issues such as the need for more flexible and individual solutions e.g. concerning
alert sound adjustments and reminders.
Conclusion: Smartphone applications can be helpful support tools to remember to take medications,
for self-monitoring, and to get overview and information about own medications and prescriptions.
However, experienced benefits depend on the applications’ usability.
