Sammanfattning
In recent years several studies have observed that when doctors become
ill they face significant and specific barriers to seeking help. One way to increase
our understanding of the doctorpatient’s perceived dilemma may be
to investigate illness narratives. In this article three biographical testimonies
written by doctors suffering from morphine addiction are interpreted, with
emphasis on Mikhail Bulgakov’s semi-fictional short-story "Morphine" (1927).
The article concludes that the doctor’s sense of conflicting roles is one contributing
factor to the dilemma. This role conflict seems to be particularly pronounced
if the medical encounter between a doctor and a patient is regarded
as a predetermined drama between fixed and incommensurable actors.
