With the concept of fantasy it is examined in this article, the meeting between health professionals and parents of children recently diagnosed with diabetes. An ethnographic analysis of the narratives expressed in health care encounter reveals that fantasies about the past, present and future are recurrent in the process of as a parent accept responsibility for the care of a child with a chronic disease. The fantasies, which can be both reproductive and subversive, are part of a negotiation about what should be considered ill and healthy. They are part of the normalization process in which families must learn to live with diabetes.
