Sammanfattning
Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is the most common congenital
malformation of the face (occurrence in Denmark 1:500 newborns).
The Danish Health Care has a long standing tradition
for support of standardized, centralized, and free treatment
for patients born with a cleft malformation (The two Cleft Lip
and Palate Centers and related university hospitals). These
centers organize all treatment related to the cleft condition
such as e.g. plastic surgery, orthodontics, and speech
training, whereas "ordinary" dental treatment and what may
follow is related to the patients’ private dentist (in adult or
pediatric dentistry). These special conditions have caused a
unique high standard of treatment and exceptional possibilities
for research in CLP. This paperwill summarize the above
mentioned treatment system, the most common cleft types,
as well as developmental disturbances in the dentition and
oral health in children with cleft lip and palate.
