The short story Michael Kohlhaas from 1808 by Heinrich von Kleist describes a man overtaken
by his need for justice, revenge and retribution. Through a close examination of the literary text, the
paper reflects on parallels between Kohlhaas and some universal themes in infancy and early
childhood, and in the adult, unconscious mind. The author suggests that the feelings of revenge are
situated not only in the paranoid-schizoid position, but also partly in the depressive position, and
that this gives the story a particularly tragic and painful character. It is shown how these
perspectives can be of use in the clinical situation
