Sammanfattning

The scope of this article is to provide an update on the association between psychosis and violence. An update on evidence-based knowledge of the psychosis-violence relationship is presented. One main finding is that specific symptom subgroups, such as persecutory delusions and violent command hallucinations, increase risk of violence. The risk is significantly enhanced if these symptoms trigger severe emotional distress in the person with psychosis. Emotional distress appears to function as a catalyst for risk of violence. Finally, we discuss possible consequences for expert witness reports on accountability assessment of persons with psychosis who have committed violent crimes.
