Sammanfattning
Sleep disorders are classified into six main groups. Insomnia is the most common of the sleep
disorders, and it is characterized by difficulty initiating sleep and/or maintaining sleep with daytime
impairment as a result. The recommended treatment for chronic insomnia is non-pharmacological
(cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia). When hypnotics are being used, intermittent dosing is
recommended. The paper discusses advantages and disadvantages with the different medications
currently in use for insomnia among adults.
