Sammanfattning

Age-related macular degeneration is the most common cause of visual loss in the Western world. The condition has a wet (neovascular) and a dry (degenerative) form. The wet form can be controlled by biological drugs whereas the dry form has no effective treatment. Treatments in development include next generation biological drugs as well as gene- and stem cell-based therapies. This review summarizes this development and explains why age-related macular degeneration has within a decade become a disease in the biotechnological forefront.
