Sammanfattning

Children exposed to maltreatment are likely to have a negative development in both physical and mental health as well as being at risk of exhibiting risk behaviours. Psycho-somatic conditions such as difficulties in sleeping and headaches in children are found to be associated with physical abuse. There are several risk factors that should be considered when recognizing child maltreatment and among these are functional disabilities. It has been shown that children with functional disabilities are approximately 3 times more likely to be exposed to child maltreatment than peers. Therefore, to fulfil the obligation of mandatory reporting it is important for all dental professionals to have knowledge of the complex aetiology of maltreatment and also to understand the association of psycho-somatic complaints with exposure to child maltreatment.
