Sammanfattning

The purpose of this study was to assess medical students’ intention to ask their patients about sexuality. Data was collected from a self-selected sample of 411 medical students at the universities in Tromsø, Trondheim, and Bergen. The results showed that, on average, medical students reported low levels of self-perceived competence related to the management of sexual problems in clinical practice. They also exhibited low levels of self-efficacy with regard to addressing non-traditional sexual issues. In addition, the results indicated that the intention to talk about sexuality in future clinical practice was predicted by sociodemographic characteristics, attitudes, self-efficacy, and competence. The most important factor for the prediction of intention was the attitude "normalization of sexuality." Students with more self-perceived competence and more self-efficacy had a stronger intention to talk about sexuality in their future practice.
