The article describes mental health in a global perspective. Psychiatric diseases as part of the
global burden of disease are referred to. Social exclusion and social factors linked to mental health
are mentioned. The importance of early childhood is also touched upon. Policy development for
mental health and care is described, with reference to Norway and to international developments; in
particular the sustainable development goals from 2015 and universal health coverage
