Sammanfattning
This study is a retrospective qualitative analysis of cystectomies and cystotomies performed at
The Department for Oral Surgery and Oral Medicine, University of Oslo, during the period 2004 -
2014.
The aim was to evaluate the prevalence of keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KOTs), and to examine
the correlation between tentative diagnosis and recurrence.
Among the 223 cysts treated, the most frequent were follicular cysts (32 %) and KOTs (20 %).
KOT were diagnosed in 27 patients, 13 women and 14 men. Average age was 40 years. Two thirds of
the tumors were located in the lower jaw, and for both jaws the posterior regions were most
commonly affected.
The recurrence rate was 25 % for both sexes. Tumors in the posterior mandible most frequently
recurred.
KOT was correctly diagnosed in 38 % of cases when KOT was among the preoperative tentative
diagnoses, and among these correctly diagnosed tumors, almost half recurred.
The prevalence of KOT is consistent with previous reports. The mode of treatment may be more
important for the tendency to recur, considering tentative diagnosis show little significance when
treated similarly.
