An initial profile of the cognitive abilities of the brain-injured patient is an important starting point for occupational therapy intervention and for further assessment. The objective of this study was to describe Norwegian occupational therapists’ experiences with the use of Loewenstein Occupational Therapy Cognitive Assessment (LOTCA) as an instrument for assessing the cognitive skills of brain injured clients. Seven occupational therapists, representing two different rehabilitation institutions, were interviewed about their experience with the use of LOTCA. In addition, for each LOTCA mapping, the occupational therapist filled in a questionnaire, regarding usefulness and time consumption, 41 in total. The results show that the occupational therapists experienced LOTCA as a useful broad screening assessment instrument of cognitive function in clients with stroke and traumatic brain injury. The study also suggests that some of the instructions for LOTCA tasks might be changed or adjusted either to clarify tasks or to update the assessment.
