In this article, we discuss how useful psychiatric diagnoses are in clinical practice. We start by pointing
out that since the diagnoses are not valid, they should at least be useful to patients and clinicians. We
show that there is little specificity in the treatment of mental disorders, and that the diagnoses do not
help much in prognostics and treatment. We conclude that the clinical utility of psychiatric diagnoses is
less than expected. The most promising alternative to traditional diagnosis may be identification of
mental problems without the implication that patients have dysfunctions or defects.
