Sammanfattning
An association between periodontitis and a large number of
other diseases has been investigated extensively during the last
25 years. Cardiovascular disease and diabetes are the most extensively
studied. An association between periodontitis and cardiovascular
disease has been clearly shown, but whether it is a causal
association and whether periodontal treatment can decrease the
risk still remains to be verified, although some studies have
demonstrated results in support thereof. The association with
diabetes is likewise well shown.
A possible association between periodontitis and cancer and
neurodegeneration respectively is less investigated. There are
some studies showing an association between periodontitis and
cancer, while the relationship with dementia seems less obvious.
Future studies should focus on the possibility of intervention,
i.e. whether periodontal treatment can decrease the risk for the
systemic diseases mentioned.
