Sammanfattning
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), being the most common inflammatory
arthritis, affects the musculoskeletal system, and frequently the
temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Prevalence of TMJ arthritis in RA
is above 50%, depending upon selection of patients and diagnostic
criteria.
Current research with regard to TMJ arthritis in RA indicates
the need for a thorough clinical and radiological examination supported
by haematology, and possibly synovial fluid analyses, due
to new research results indicating a different cytokine profile and
the detection of bacteria in the TMJ synovial fluid. This paper discusses
the current treatment alternatives in TMJ arthritis in RA.
