Sammanfattning

Nationwide surveys reveal that pupils in middle school (age between 13–14 and-16–17 years) struggle with depressive thoughts and feelings. There is little detailed knowledge about the importance of gender and age in relation to this. On the basis of a survey in a school in the South of Norway (n=778), we found that girls, more than boys, reported higher negative emotional (depressive) load in the 9th grade, compared to the 8th grade. In a subsequent focus group interview (n=6) of girls in the 9th grade, this was explained with three distinct forms of pressure: grade pressure, body pressure and gang pressure, and that these three forms of pressure interact, and particularly importantly, had changed between the 8th and 9th grade.
