It is important to investigate whether metacognition is related to body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) as this has been found in related disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder. Our study tested whether metacognition along with unhelpful coping behaviors and avoidance explained significant variance in BDD symptoms after controlling for age, gender, and symptoms of anxiety and depression. The sample consisted of 222 Norwegian participants recruited through social media. A regression analysis found metacognitions, unhelpful coping, and avoidance behavior to be significant predictors of BDD symptoms. The results support a metacognitive understanding of BDD. Future research should further develop a metacognitive model of BDD and systematically evaluate the effect of metacognitive therapy for BDD.
