Health literacy, the ability to obtain, understand, communicate, evaluate and use health information, is a prerequisite for patient participation. Studies have shown that health literacy can affect how and when patients seek health care, participate in screening programs, follow treatment recommendations, and so on. Patients’ utilization of health information depend on individual preconditions, but even more on health care providers’ capability to communicate and to provide inclusive and accessible information which is easy to understand. Three methods which can be used to improve health care organizations’ health literacy are: Teach-back/Förstå mig rätt, person centered patient education, and communication support with pictures.
