Sammanfattning

Stereotypes of «old people» portray elderly individuals as nice, but incompetent, and the aging process is commonly associated with exaggerated notions of physical and mental decline. Beyond being a cause of discrimination from others, such stereotypes can be detrimental for older individuals when they are internalized into the self. In this paper, I review recent (2010–2015) research on the consequences of internalization and activation of age stereotypes for the health, well-being and performance of older individuals. The reviewed articles document detrimental effects of age stereotypes across a range of outcomes (e.g., health behaviors, death, recovery from disability, hospitalization, will to live, subjective health, self-perceptions, memory, and cognitive performance), but also show promising results from an intervention aimed at improving physical performance through strengthening positive views on aging.
