Sammanfattning
Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the consequences and effects of forced medication on patients with mental disorders.
Methods: A systematic search was conducted in Medline. Additional papers were identified after consulting experts in the field.
Results: Researchers in this field use different methods and outcome measures. The effects are small, and often not consistent between studies. Patients’ insight into own illness and treatment adherence, are important factors for how the measure is accepted. Caretakers tend to overrate the patients’ acceptance of forced medication. Patients mention alternatives to forced medication when asked.
Conclusions: There is little research and varied results in studies on forced medication, and the effects of this practice is unclear. Additional randomized controlled trials should be conducted to determine the effects of forced medication.
