This article explores positive and negative reactions that victims of sexual abuse receive from their informal network. Positive support contributes to the victim’s understanding of the assault and promotes an inclination to seek professional help. Negative reactions may entail confusion about the experience, feelings of guilt and responsibility, and reluctance to seek professional help. The article argues that professionals should employ a network-oriented approach in which victim support includes both direct and indirect network interventions.
