Sammanfattning

Introduction: A large number of today's mothers are active users of a Smartphone. The Smartphone is both useful and enjoyable, but with this new technology come various challenges. The purpose of this study was to investigate how mothers manage to divide their attention between the use of Smartphones while at the same time attending to their children’s needs. Method: A qualitative research method was used with individual interviews of thirteen mothers with children between the ages of 3–12 months. Result: Through analysis of the results, three main categories denoting the mothers' thoughts and experiences were discovered of using the Smartphone when they were with their child. Mothers describe the Smartphones as an extended arm in their everyday lives. The Smartphone is also seen as a time thief as it takes much of the mothers’ time and attention. Informants see that there is a need for more awareness in relation to their use of Smartphone. Conclusion: Mothers experienced challenges in many instances relating to balancing their attention between the use of Smartphones and being there for the child. Increased knowledge and awareness is important so that mothers can make intelligent choices in relation to the use of the Smartphone while the child is awake.
