Sammanfattning
Patients with cancer are often in a state of crisis when receiving information and making decisions regarding participation in a clinical trial. Therefore, the objectives of this study were: 1) Do patients experience to have their understanding of a trial qualified by a telephone-based intervention prior to decision making? 2) Is the intervention feasible? The patients went through the standard informed consent procedure either with a supplementary telephone-based intervention or without. All patients completed a questionnaire regarding their experiences of the informed consent process. Afterwards, involved physicians and nurses participated in an interview to evaluate the intervention. The intervention had limited impact on decision-making. Whereas, the impact was huge on patients’ feeling of being well-informed and confident. The patients lacked knowledge about specific trial procedures. However, side effects and how to integrate the trial into daily life were the most important topics discussed on the telephone. The intervention was evaluated feasible although vulnerable. In conclusion, the patients’ foundation of understanding and feeling confident about the trial were improved by the intervention. Which patients would benefit the most needs to be further investigated.
