Sammanfattning
It is estimated that about 140,000 Danes are addicted to alcohol,
and that about 70,000-90,000 predominantly younger Danes, are
using illicit drugs on an almost daily basis. The prevalence of binge
drinking among Danish youth is the highest in Europe and Danish
youth are among those who have most often tried cannabis. On
the other hand, regular use of cannabis among Danish youth is significantly
lower than e.g. youth from Southern European countries.
17 % of all Danes smoke tobacco on a daily basis, while this is the
case for 14 % of Danish youth. Consumption of any substance in a
country depends among other things on the degree of normalisation
of its use in the general population. Alcohol, including binge
drinking, is largely normalised in Denmark, whereas in the USA,
for example, it is significantly less accepted. Cannabis use, on the
other hand, is much more normalised in the United States than in
Denmark, which is also reflected in the level of consumption. In
terms of more problematic use, addiction to illicit drugs are not
least linked to socially and mentally vulnerable young people, while
addiction to alcohol is more evenly divided between different age
groups and social classes.
