Sammanfattning
The purpose of this study was to describe pain in children during the first days, after bonding of fixed orthodontic appliances. A questionnaire was answered by 181 children and adolescents younger than 17 years who had received fixed orthodontic appliances on two private orthodontic clinics in the period 2013 - 2015. Pain intensity was scored on a visual-analog scale from one (no pain) to ten (highest possible pain) the first five days after treatment. Type of pain and intake of analgesics were reported. In total 181 children returned the questionnaire. Mean age was 12.4 years (sd 1.4). The two first days after treatment, 90 % of the children reported pain. The highest pain intensity 5.1 (sd 2.3) was reported the day after bonding of orthodontic appliances and decreased gradually to 1.7 (sd 1.2) on day four after bonding. Approximately 50 % of children used analgesics the first two days after bonding of fixed appliances. Girls seemed to report higher pain intensity than boys. Most children reported that bonding of fixed orthodontic appliance was painful the first days after treatment. The results of this survey suggest that analgesics should be available the first days after treatment and pre-operative information should recommend use of soft food 5 days after bonding of appliances.
