Sammanfattning

Family members often have roles as advocates and provide care for nursing home residents. Collaboration with families is an important part of a person-centred care and may increase the quality of care. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of long-term care residents’ next-of-kin and how to encounter and support the relatives as collaborative partners and resources, in light of a person-centred care model. Qualitative method was used. Sixteen relatives were interviewed in three different focus groups. The findings indicate that the relatives had mixed feelings toward the nursing home and the role as next-of-kin. They felt a relief when the needs of their loved ones were taken care of, and had great confidence in the service when everything went well. However, they often felt insecurity when they experienced that quality of service was not good enough. This led to increased time spent in the nursing home and follow-up on care. Relatives experienced that they were either included and involved, or excluded and as outsiders. There is an interdependence between strengthening and involving families, and care that is person-centred and promotes residents’ health in nursing homes.
