Sammanfattning

ABSTRACT It is a policy that people suffering from dementia should have the opportunity to live at home for as long as possible. Many spouses address the challenges regarding the change of be haviour of the person affected by dementia. This may lead to changes in communication and interaction. For spouses this can affect both the physical and mental health in a negative direction.» Purpose: The purpose of this study was to elucidate spouses of persons with dementia living at home and their experience with Marte Meo guidance focusing on communication and interaction. The sample is four spouses living at home with their dementia-stricken partners. Methodologically, the study is based on phenomenological philosophy. The study has a qualitative design based on in-depth interviews and interview guides. The analytical approach for the study is Giorgis analysis methodology. The general structure formulate the findings as following: «to see and to be seen in a challenging environment» and two subtopics, «to ‘see’ the dementia-stricken partner, an ambiguous experience» and «to see and acknowledge their own needs». Conclusion and relevance for practice The findings claims that Marte Meo guidance can provide spouses a acknowledge of suffer by clearly see the damages dementia causes the partner and the interactions in the relationship. The findings also highlight the spouse’s acknowledgement of their own needs in their challenging role as a partner. Marte Meo guidance may provide an opportunity of reorientation and increased interaction competence for the spouses. In this way, Marte Meo can provide help in a challenging situation and reliving some burdens of the spouse's.
