Sammanfattning

The large number of asylum-seeking children and young people arriving in Sweden in 2015 raises the issue of young migrants’ own views regarding their health needs and how the available healthcare meets them. We conducted a review of research evidence published in English and Swedish, as well grey literature and an evaluation of the welfare system’s affordances. Limited evidence reporting children’s own views and opinions of their healthcare were found compared to research reporting professionals’ views of young migrants’ health needs. Asylum-seeking children’s life situation and the extent and quality of the support they receive affects whether they feel healthy or not. The welfare system in Sweden is family-centered such that young people who lack parental support and good adult advocacy risk becoming invisible. To avoid the exclusion of asylum-seeking children and young people, their own priorities should inform long-term planning for their healthcare needs.
