Sammanfattning
In Denmark as well as in the rest of the world the emergence and
spread of multi resistant bacteria are increasing. This could ultimately
lead to a post-antibiotic era with a considerable limitation in
treatment options in the health care system. A number of papers
have reported the emergence and transmission of MRSA (methicillin
resistant Staphylococcus aureus) in dental clinics, while dental
transmission of multi resistant Enterobacteriaceae and Enterococcus
has not yet been registered. Dentists can support the prevention
of dissemination of multi resistant bacteria in the community
by always following the guidelines on general infection control during
clinical work. Additionally, dentists can prevent development of
bacterial resistance with implications for not just oral but also the
general health by halting the increasing prescription of antibiotics
by dentists registered the past decades. The indications for administration
of antibiotics should be limited in concordance with the
“National clinical guideline on usage of antibiotics in dentistry” published
by the Danish Health Authority in 2016, and when prescribing
antibiotics, a narrow spectrum antibiotic should be chosen.
