Sammanfattning

Hope is considered an important factor within the field of mental health care. However, there is disagreement about what this means in general, as well as in in clinical practice, or what hope consists of. The study aimed to gain knowledge about how mental healthcare professionals in community healthcare experienced and expressed hope, using a descriptive and exploratory design with multistage focus group interviews. Five healthcare professionals were interviewed twice and systematic text analysis used. Three themes emerged: Hope is related to human existence; to enhance values and responsibility; and to be the user’s companion. We discuss the contents of different expressions of hope, and discuss hope expressions in relation to other phenomena and the components that enhance hope or contribute to hopelessness.
