Sammanfattning
The paper presents findings from a study in which the purpose was to explore persons’ experiences in
the aftermath of suicide attempts. The research question was: What thoughts do persons have about
the attempted suicide? This study has been carried out employing Gadamer’s hermeneutics. The data is
collected through research interviews with ten participants, aged 21–52, recruited from two emergency
psychiatric units and one crisis resolution team. Through a thematic interpretation three themes emerged:
A wish to terminate the suffering; the thought of repetition as both frightening and alluring; the
suicide attempt – reality or ‘merely’ a cry for help? Suicide attempts can be understood intrinsically and
extrinsically. Research on the experiences from persons in the aftermath of a suicide attempt is therefore
essential to develop the most comprehensive understanding.
