E-health is by many said to improve healthcare. In this article we explore
e-health for the elderly in rural areas, with specific focus on ”virtual health
rooms”. We highlight emerging ideas and expectations on digital care and
analyse how they are connected to various discourses. This shows ideological
beliefs about healthcare and problematizes the introduction of digital
care. Using policy documents as empirical material we show how ideas on
virtual health rooms are interlinked with discourses on patient participation,
active ageing and rurality as a problem. Furthermore, we suggest that this
could affect the care and health of the elderly and therefore, that rural ehealth
needs to be approached critically.
