Sammanfattning

In the field of nursing, reference is made to standards, recommendations and evidence-based initiatives. In spite of this, patients often experience a lack of quality in nurse-patient relations and communication with the health professional. The article focuses on mediating key communicative principles for the health professional to apply in practice. The intention is to demonstrate how patient involvement and relational skills-building serve to establish a common path and an acknowledging rapport with the patient. By drawing on the Calgary-Cambridge Guide and examples from practice, the study demonstrates how health professionals can foster conditions for nursing excellence. The patient’s problem should be addressed by listening to their basic narrative, and the key message of the article is that the ramifications of what we say are often far wider than we might imagine. In this way, the article argues the case that relational and communicative skills are not a given, but something that can and should be trained.
