Sammanfattning
Adults are afflicted by grief on the death of a significant loved one. In this situation, the health professional has an important role in relation to adults whose bereavement brings them into contact with the health system. Five qualitative interviews of women aged between 37 and 56, all of whom had lost an adult next of kin, investigated bereaved adults’ perceptions of aspects such as health professional responses. The interviews are indicative of the need to give higher priority to grief intervention to ensure that the recently bereaved have the best preconditions for coping, and for processing their grief. In order for health professionals to provide expert grief intervention, there is a need for both professional training and empathy. There is also a need to systematise grief intervention in the health service as a whole. The article is based on a master’s thesis on humanistic nursing in palliative care at Aalborg University.
