Sammanfattning
The ”National Graduate School in Odontological
Science” was the first school of this kind in Sweden.
The program ran for five years, from 2009 to 2014,
in collaboration with the four dental faculties. The
management consisted of a Program Director and
four coordinators from the Dental Schools in Umeå,
Stockholm, Göteborg and Malmö plus one representative
from the County Council.
Two courses, of approximately one week, were
arranged across Sweden every year on topics that
included cell biology, oral biofilms and risk, a crossdisciplinary
course in biomaterials, development
and regeneration of bones and teeth, generic skills
for odontological research, health psychology, pain
and inflammation, and immunity. These courses
were an excellent opportunity for the students to
meet and learn from each other.
To date, 17 of the 20 students have now finished
their doctoral studies. Only two of the original 20
students interrupted their studies. All PhD theses
were on a high international level and mostly related
to clinical research.
A follow-up study was carried out between September
and December 2017, with a questionnaire of
13 open questions sent to all students. The response
rate was 100 percent. All students were very positive
to the Graduate School experience, especially
regarding the social network, even if some critical
comments were given regarding courses and the
economy. Moreover, after finishing their PhD’s
the students have successfully progressed in their
careers.
