Sammanfattning
This article presents and discusses the evidence base of psychodynamic therapy (PDT) for an adult client population. In a number of authoritative recent meta-analyses and reviews, applying updated criteria for establishing evidence, PDT demonstrates good effects in the treatment of a range of common mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, addiction, and personality disorders. This is in line with the latest Cochrane report that explicitly describes PDT as effective. The effect of PDT is stable or increasing at follow-up. It seems particularly effective when treating complex mental health problems such as personality disorders and multiple comorbidity. It is time to leave the myth that PDT lacks evidence. These findings, however, give rise to a number of discussions that are presented, such as the application of the RCT design, the problem of statistical power, the usefulness of establishing evidence of a treatment vis-à-vis specific disorders, and the extent to which treatment outcomes can actually be traced back to the type of therapy or treatment model used.
