How can results from empirical studies inform supervisors in handling unconscious dynamics in the supervision relationship in order to promote the learning of the supervisee? The paper aims to address if these results can inform evidence-based practice in psychoanalytic-oriented supervision and presents a review of relevant empirical studies. Results indicate that supervisors should pay close attention to potential unconscious processes. However, it is not a clear-cut answer to whether supervisors should address these processes or not. Supervisees have different preferences and needs. In case of evoked negative feelings in supervisees, supervisors seem preferably to start «analysing» the supervisee. Supervisors need to learn a repertory of alternative approaches, such as to meta-communicate with the supervisee on how to handle the feelings.
