Sammanfattning

Because social relations are important for health, participation in civil society organizations, with many opportunities for interaction, should be important for promoting public health. This integrative review in the SocINDEX database found that youth-organizations can contribute to health-promotion if they manage to balance support, control and involvement. The adult leaders have important roles in this process. But the risk is that selection-processes exclude youth in greater need of support, and that better health among participants is mainly due to that those with poorer health choose to step aside. Different associations are exclusive to different degree and it is therefore misguiding to have general expectations that participation in civil society should promote public health.
