Sammanfattning
Patients suffering from dry mouth have reduced resistance against caries and erosion. A host of products are frequently recommended for patients with dry mouth for prevention and symptom relief. Few studies have investigated the safety of these products with regards to erosion however. This article reports on three studies which investigated the pH and erosive potential of dry mouth treatments and mouth rinses. A wide variation in pH values was found. Furthermore, a significant negative relationship was found between the pH values and erosive potential of the products. While these in vitro experiments cannot be directly extrapolated into the clinical scenario, these results suggest that care should be taken when recommending products for patients susceptible to caries and erosion.
